Teachers can keep the dream alive and stay on the road longer in 2010.

Experienced teachers are being lured out of retirement by the State Government in a bid to boost teacher numbers and relieve hard-working staff.

Before packing the van and checking the road map, retired teachers choosing the grey nomad path are keeping the dream alive longer through The Grey Nomads Teacher Recruitment Program.

It is part of a massive Government campaign to attract and retain "quality staff", following a jump in teacher resignations over the past five years.

Scholarships, "boomerang" transfers for short-term placements in difficult to staff locations and statewide promotional events are all part of the recruitment drive. The Education Minister, launched the program earlier in 2009 and was tested in schools within Fitzroy-central-west, north and southwest Queensland school regions and provided placements for retired and semi retired teachers from just a few days to longer term.

Is it on offer for 2010?

The Department has expanded the the program in 2010 to include the regions of:
  • Mackay- Whitsunday
  • Far North Queenlsand
  • Wide Bay - Burnett
  • Darling Downs - South West Queensland
  • North Queensland

You can see in more detail the QLD school regions at the following QLD school regional map.
